Owner and Coach Shawn Cox has over twenty years of experience in both Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Marcos "Yemaso" Torregrosa. With a strong competitive pedigree, Coach Cox focuses his energy on teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for both sport and self-defense at all age ranges and abilities.
Where should I start?.
There are several ways to familiarize yourself with jiu jitsu prior to attending your first class. While YouTube, social media, and message boards may give you some insight, every gym is different, meaning your experience likely won't match what you see online. Coming in to see for yourself is one of the best ways to meet the coach, the people you'll be rolling with, and to get a feel for the environment/speed of class. All are welcome to come in and watch class, or even hop straight on the mats. The first class is always free!
Do I need to be in shape?
No. Kind of. If you have questions about your health, talk to a doctor to make sure it's safe to engage in physical activity. Medical concerns aside, jiu jitsu is accessible for all body types, and accommodations can be made for certain injuries to allow you to stay on the mats and keep learning.
Do I need to bring anything?
Most athletic wear is sufficient for beginners who aren't sure they want to invest in a proper jiu jitsu gi. Avoid clothing that is excessively loose fitting or with pockets that could easily catch a finger or toe. It's always recommended to keep fingers and toenails trimmed to avoid unnecessary cuts to your training partners.
Do you offer private lessons?
Private lessons with Coach Cox are available for $80 per lesson, and at a discounted rate of $150 when you buy 3.
Why would I sign my child up for this?
Martial arts of all disciplines teach confidence, discipline, consent, appropriate boundaries, and accountability. Jiu jitsu does this with the added benefit of minimizing the chance of contact injuries related to striking, throws, or even high speed collisions in other traditional sports. Best of all, it facilitates learning while breaking a sweat with one of the most grueling resistance machines ever built: another human.
What does it cost to join?
The adult rate is $125 per month, with discounts available for families, veterans, law enforcement, and first responders. Kid memberships are $80 per month. There is no limit to the number of classes attended per month, and no extra fees for belt promotion or stripes. The first class is always free, but keep an eye out for free week deals as well.
What is the ranking system?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu's adult ranking system consists of five colored belts (white, blue, purple, brown, and black) with white being the least experienced, and black signifying mastery. Strips of tape wrapped around the end of a belt signify experience within a specific belt, though these aren't always utilized for upper belts. While everyone's jiu jitsu journey is different, the somewhat controversial rule of thumb is that with consistent training and focus on development, a person will spend roughly 2 to 3 years at each belt level.
Kid belt rankings are similar, but utilize a different color set (white, grey, yellow, orange, and green).
What's with the women only class?
Women are invited to all of our adult classes, but women often face two significant challenges breaking into the sport of Jiu Jitsu: 1) they are often a vast minority and 2) they are almost always outsized. This can be incredibly intimidating, and potentially detrimental to skills development if you rarely every get to match up against people of a similar stature. Womens only classes allow for a coordinated session that increases the chances of (more) equal matchups for both our female members and first timers that may feel more comfortable in this setting.
